St. Paul, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team took its first loss of the season Saturday as it fell to the College of St. Benedict by the score of 5-4. With the loss, MSU falls to 1-1 on the season.
Minnesota State was originally scheduled to take part in the Macalester Invitational Saturday, but poor weather cancelled the event. The teams then broke off into pairs and played a dual match.
The Mavericks began the day winning one of the three doubles matches as sophomore
Sarah McCann and freshman
Melissa Mashburn won the No. 2 doubles match 8-6. The pairing of junior
Shealyn Bakke and sophomore
Kelly Lechowski lost the first doubles match 8-4, while the pairing of senior
Alexis Ronney and sophomore
Alexis Haakedahl lost the No. 3 doubles match 8-6.
The Mavericks followed up with three victories in singles matches. Mashburn took the #4 singles match 6-2, 6-1, while Haakedahl won the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 7-5. Ronney claimed the final MSU win in the No. 6 singles match with a 6-3, 0-6, 10-6 win.
MSU wraps up its fall schedule on Saturday, Oct. 5, as it hosts Emporia State, at 2 p.m.
