Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's tennis team opened the season on a high note Wednesday as it swept the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings 9-0.
The Mavericks began the day winning all three of the doubles matches.
The pairing of junior
Shealyn Bakke and sophomore
Kelly Lechowski won the No. 1 doubles match 8-1, while sophomore
Sarah McCann and freshman
Melissa Mashburn won the No. 2 doubles match 8-0. The team of senior
Alexis Ronney and sophomore
Alexis Haakedahl won the third doubles match 8-2.
MSU was equally dominant in the singles matches, having swept all six in straight sets.
McCann won the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-2, while Mashburn claimed the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 7-5. Bakke kept the momentum going with a 6-0, 6-2 win the third singles match, while sophomore
Monica Sanvik took the sixth singles match 6-1, 6-0.
Haakedahl and Ronney wrapped up the sweep with identical 6-0, 6-0 wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, respectively.
MSU returns to action Sept. 28 as it takes part in the Macalester Invitational in St. Paul, Minn.
