Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- It took two extra innings to decide the winner of the NCAA Division II Central 2 Regional Tournament, and Winona State proved victorious as it earned the 4-3 victory and will advance to the Super Regional Tournament.
The Mavericks came out with a sense of urgency as senior shortstop
Abby Sonner and junior second basemen each recorded singles and it was junior
Anna Cole continuing her hot streak from the plate recording the two-out single scoring both Sonner and Holien taking a 2-0 lead after the two-out rally.
Winona State would tie that game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning as it posted two runs on two hits with one Maverick error. The Mavericks escaped the half-inning with minimal damage, completing a double play to retire the side.
MSU would regain the lead in the top of the sixth inning as freshman first basemen
Tatum Klein recorded a leadoff single, she would be batted in by junior catcher
Lindsay Erickson who recorded the RBI single, once again with two outs.
The Warriors would knot the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning as they posted one run on two hits, but left three runners stranded.
It took two extra innings for either team to post the winning run, and it came off of the bat of Winona State senior third basemen Brittany Stewart who recorded the game winning RBI single with two outs, lifting the Warriors to the NCAA Division II Central Super Regional Tournament
Senior pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue pitched all 8.2 innings giving up four runs on 10 hits with four walks and a strike out.
Cole once again led the Maverick offense, continuing her hot streak from the plate, she recorded two RBI on one hit in four at bats. Collectively, MSU posted three runs on seven hits with one error.
The Mavericks posted a 40-12 record and were crowned the NSIC regular season champions and NSIC tournament champions for the second consecutive season.
