Mavericks Blank Wolves in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Saint Peter, Minn.. --- The Minnesota State University softball team held Northern State University scoreless in its double header this afternoon, winning by scores of 3-0 and 8-0 in five innings, improving to 23-7 on the season and 8-2 in NSIC action.
 
The Mavericks were able to tally the first run of the afternoon as freshman Tatum Klein, who led off in the third inning recorded a single, eventually crossing home plate, giving MSU a 1-0 lead after three innings.
 
The Wolves would knock on the Mavericks door as they saw runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the fourth inning, but the MSU defense recorded the third out of the inning, leaving two NSU runners on base.
 
MSU would tally another run in the sixth inning as junior Lindsay Erickson got things started with a two out double, freshman Emily Bransky would pinch run for Erickson with junior Samantha Holien stepping into the batter’s box, Holien would connect on a ground-rule double, scoring Bransky. Junior Anna Cole continued the two-out rally with an RBI single scoring Holien, giving the Mavericks a 3-0 lead after five innings.
 
The Mavericks would hold the Wolves scoreless, earning the 3-0 win. Senior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue went 6.2 innings giving up five hits, but no runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
 
MSU was led offensively by Holien who recorded one run and one RBI in three at-bats in addition to six putouts in the field.
 
The Mavericks wasted no time scoring in the second contest of the day as senior Lauryn Morris crossed home plate off of an Erickson single. Erickson would score MSU’s second run of the inning as it was Holien recording the RBI single. The Mavericks continued the first inning offensive outpouring as junior Kelly Wood recorded a three run shot extending the MSU lead to 5-0.
 
MSU would record three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning, extending its lead to 8-0. Erickson got things started with a double, followed by Holien who recorded the RBI double, Cole would then hit a single, scoring Holien and would eventually score on a passed ball proving to be the final run of the contest.
 
Erickson led the offensive charge for MSU in the second outing of the day, recording two runs on two hits with one RBI in the contest, while Wood recorded one hit and one run in three at-bats with three RBI.
 
Sophomore Brittany Lauterbach pitched all five innings giving up two hits and walking one batter but fanned four batters en route to her sixth win of the campaign.
 
The Mavericks will return to action Sunday as they play MSU-Moorhead on the Gustavus Adolphus football field, game times still to be determined.
