No. 19 Mavericks Earn Share of NSIC Regular Season Title with Sweep Over Huskies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Cloud, Minn. --- Nineteenth-rated Minnesota State University softball team capped off the 2013 regular season sweeping St. Cloud State by scores of 3-2 and 7-3 to earn a share of the NSIC regular season title. The Mavericks finished the regular season with an overall mark of 34-10 while going 19-5 in NSIC action.
 
The Mavericks entered the day tied with the University of Minnesota, Duluth atop the NSIC Standings, both teams swept their opponents today after splitting a pair of games against one another yesterday, the two teams posted marks of 19-5 in league action this season.
 
The first contest of the afternoon started with a defensive battle before the Mavericks ended the scoring draught posting a single run in the top of the sixth inning as junior Lauryn Morris crossed home plate off of a Lindsay Erickson single.
 
SCSU would answer with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Mavericks notched two more runs in the top of the seventh inning claiming the 3-2 win.
 
Senior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue was credited with the win, her 19th of the campaign, working a complete game, giving up two runs on four hits with one strikeout.
 
Offensively Erickson recorded two hits in three at-bats with an RBI while Morris recorded one run in two at-bats and also recorded an RBI. Collectively the Mavericks tallied three runs on five hits but also committed two errors.
 
In the second game of the twinbill the Mavericks found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning, but were able to post a run in the third and fifth innings, bringing the game to a 2-2 draw heading into the sixth inning.
 
The MSU offense came to life in the top half of the sixth inning as the Mavericks posted five runs. Morris, senior Jenna Peterson, junior Eryn Edgerton, and freshmen Tatum Klein and Laura Milligan, who was pinch running for senior Abby Sonner, all posted runs in the inning extending the lead to 7-2.
 
The Huskies recorded a run in the bottom half of the inning cutting the MSU lead to 7-3, but the Mavericks would go on to win the contest by a score of 7-3.
 
Sophomore Brittany Lauterbach got the starting nod in the circle, she gave up three runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work. Peterson was called in as relief, she went 1.1 innings holding the Huskies scoreless and didn’t allow a hit.
 
Offensively both Morris and Sonner recorded two hits and two RBI, while Morris also posted two runs in three at-bats.
 
The Mavericks will compete in the NSIC Conference Tournament beginning May 2, in Rochester, Minn. MSU’s opponent and time still to be determined.
