Box Score 2 Savage, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University softball team opened its conference schedule against Concordia-St. Paul. The Mavericks downed the Golden Bears in the first game, 5-1, but fell 3-2 in the second game, improving to 16-6 overall and 1-1 in NSIC Play.
The Mavericks started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as junior
Anna Cole blasted a two-run shot with one out, scoring junior
Kelly Wood who reached on a single.
MSU would follow that up with a three run homerun off the bat of junior
Samantha Holien scoring senior
Lauryn Morris, who singled and junior
Lindsay Erickson who reached on a walk, bringing the score to 5-0 in favor of the Mavericks after three innings.
Senior pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue pitched five innings, giving up one hit and no runs. Sophomore
Brittany Lauterbach came in as relief, she gave up one run on two hits in two innings of work.
Minnesota State was able to record five hits, and committed an error in the first game, while Concordia-St. Paul recorded one run, on three hits with one error.
The Mavericks found themselves down 2-0 going into the top of the second inning of game two before Holien blasted her second dinger of the day, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of the Golden Bears.
Concordia-St. Paul would record its fourth hit of the contest, adding a run in the top of the fifth inning bringing the score to 3-1.
MSU would trail 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, before Cole would lead-off with a double, freshman
Laura Milligan would pinch run, freshman
Tatum Klein singled, scoring Milligan. Morris would then step to the plate but would fly out to right field, ending the game.
McKelvogue went all seven innings for the Mavericks giving up three runs on four hits, all three runs were earned.
MSU recorded two runs on eight hits while CU tallied three runs on four hits committing one error.
The Mavericks will return to action Friday, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. as they host Minnesota, Crookston in the Savage Sports Center, in Savage, Minn.
