Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. --- The No. 6 Minnesota State University softball team took to the diamond for the second day of the NFCA Leadoff Tournament, the Mavericks fell to Southeast Oklahoma State and University of California, San Diego by scores of 6-4 and 2-1 respectively, falling to 1-3 on the season.
The Mavericks struck first against SOSU, batting in two runs in the third inning. Senior outfielder Lauren Morris was walked, senior shortstop
Abby Sonner then hit a double, scoring Morris. With Sonner on second senior catche
r Lindsay Erickson was able to record a single, scoring Sonner.
SOSU was able to bring the game to a 2-2 tie after the top of the fifth inning, and was able to bat in four runs in the seventh inning, taking a 6-2 lead midway through the seventh inning.
The Mavericks found themselves down four runs with two outs before Morris was once again walked. Sonner, batting second, then doubled, scoring Morris. Freshman utility player
Laura Milligan was placed on second, pinch running for Sonner. Erickson was able to record her third hit of the game, by way of a double, scoring Milligan, cutting the SOSU lead to 6-4. The Mavericks weren’t able to drive in Erickson as SOSU tallied the third out of the inning, ending the game.
Senior pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue was tagged with the loss, she pitched 6.2 innings giving up six runs on seven hits. Senior pitcher Jenna Peterson came in as relief, Peterson pitched a third of an inning and gave up one hit. Erickson led the Mavericks offensive charge recording three hits in four at-bats and two RBI.
Minnesota State then faced the University of California, San Diego in its second game of the day, the Tritons struck first posting a run in both the fourth and the fifth innings, holding a 2-0 lead entering the sixth inning.
Junior outfielder
Eryn Edgerton got on base by way of an error in the sixth inning, but was thrown out on a fielder’s choice, which placed Peterson on first base. Sonner then stepped to the plate and hit a double, scoring Peterson, proving to be the only run of the game for the Mavericks.
Freshman pitcher
Coley Ries was tagged with the loss, bringing her collegiate record to 1-1. Ries pitched five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and struck-out two batters. Sophomore pitcher
Brittany Lauterbach came in to relieve Ries, Lauterbach faced four batters and gave up one hit.
MSU was led offensively by Sonner who recorded one hit and one RBI in three at-bats, defensively she recorded two put-outs and two assists.
The Mavericks will play their final two games of the NFCA Leadoff Tournament tomorrow, pairing still have not been decided.
