Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. --- It took Minnesota State 10 innings to post their first run of the 2013 campaign, as it fell to No. 13 Central Oklahoma 1-0 in the first game of the day, and downed Missouri-St. Louis 5-2 in the second game, to improve to 1-1 on the season.
“Overall I’m pleased with how our defense played and pitchers threw. The difference between being 2-0 and 1-1 is that we weren’t able to get a key hit when given the opportunities,” said head coach
Lori Meyer.
In the first game of the day, it was the Bronchos that got on the scoreboard first in the third inning. This proved the be the lone run of the game as the Mavericks earned five hits and recorded one error in the game.
Senior pitcher
Courtney McKelvogue was tagged with the loss as she pitched a complete game. Mckelvogue recorded four strikeouts and gave up just one unearned run. Senior center fielder
Lauren Morris led the offensive charge as she posted two hits. MSU left eight runners stranded in the game, as it fell 1-0.
Freshman pitcher
Coley Ries was credited with the win in the Mavericks second game of the day in her first collegiate start. Ries allowed five hits and walked four batters, but was able to record six strikeouts.
“We did a nice job bouncing back," Meyer said. "I could tell Coley was nervous on the mound, she worked through the first inning and got stronger as the game went on. We ended on a good note with those hits in the eighth inning."
MSU trailed 1-0 through five innings before senior
Abby Sonner was able to earn the RBI, as she batted Morris in, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie. It would require extra innings to decide the outcome as the Mavericks were able to record four runs in the eighth inning to earn the 5-2 victory.

Kelly Wood each recorded two runs against UMSL, as the Mavericks finished the game with seven hits. Junior
Samantha Holien got the Mavericks added some insureance runs in the extra inning knocking in a two-run dinger, her and Sonner each recorded a game-high two RBI.
The Mavericks return to the diamond tomorrow as they square-off against Southeast Oklahoma State and UC San Diego, first-pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT) and 5 p.m. CT respectively.
