Box Score WINONA, Minn. --- Fourth-ranked Minnesota State lost its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match in over two years as the Mavericks fell 1-0 at Winona State Sunday afternoon at Verizon Wireless Stadium.
Â
The loss is MSU's first in NSIC competition since a 1-0 defeat at Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 30, 2011. The Mavericks now stand 15-2-1 overall and finish 13-1-1 in league play having already clinched the regular-season conference championship. WSU improves to 14-2-2 on the year and 13-2-0 within the conference.
Â
Minnesota State's NSIC unbeaten streak ends at 34 matches which is tied for the 10th-longest streak in NCAA Division II history. That conference unbeaten streak is also the all-time NSIC record.
Â
Both teams fired seven shots in first half, but it was the Warriors who struck first in what would be the match's decisive goal. In the 37th minute, senior
Jennifer DeRoo entered the box and played a cross to junior
Alaina Kne who touched the ball past diving junior
Molly McGough (Centennial, Colo.) giving WSU a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Mavericks outshot the Warriors 7-5 in the second stanza but were unable to solve Warrior senior goalkeeper
Alexandra Vial and a WSU defense that did not allow any Maverick more than two shots in the contest.
Â
MSU owned a 14-12 lead in shots, while Winona State held a 7-6 edge in shots and 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. McGough and Vial each recorded six saves in the match for their respective teams.
Â
Minnesota State will enter the NSIC tournament as the top seed and host eighth-seeded Minot State at The Pitch in the first round Wednesday afternoon at a time yet to be determined.
