Pitching and Key Hitting Lifts MSU to Saturday Sweep over SMSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Mankato, Minn.-- The ninth-ranked Minnesota State softball team  (38-7, 18-2 NSIC) swept the Southwest Minnesota State (19-17, 10-10 NSIC) on its senior day at the Diamond at Gage Towers Saturday. The Mavericks took the first game 3-0 before earning the 2-0 win in game two. MSU senior Kendra Huettl and junior Courtney McKelvogue each pitched two-hitters in the NSIC victories. The Mavericks have not allowed a run in the last 30 innings played. 
 
In the opener, MSU used three one-run innings to secure the win as it outhit SMSU 6-2 in the game.  

The Mavericks got on the board in the second inning when Brittani Robinson scored. Robinson reached first on a walk before junior Abby Sonner moved her to second on a fielder’s choice. Robinson put on the jets from second base when Chelsea Riordan singled past the short stop, to put MSU on the board.

Sonner then reached the base paths after an error by the Mustangs in the fourth inning as she was knocked in by Riodan’s RBI double to center field, putting MSU up 2-0.

Robinson scored the final run of the game when she started of the sixth inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Robinson was sac-bunted to second base and reached third when Riordan grounded out to short. MSU senior infielder Amanda Umhoefer hit an infield single to score Robinson, secure the 3-0 win.

Huettl went seven innings, giving up just two hits and striking out 11 in her 17th win of the season. Riordan had two hits and two RBI in the game to highlight the Maverick offense.

In the nightcap, McKelvogue went the distance to also earn her 17th win of the season as she gave up just two hits and struck out six Mustang batters.

The Mavercks used a two-run second inning to secure the 2-0 win. Sophomore Kelly Wood and Sonner both singled early in the second. Riordan singled to score Wood from second as she got in a run down between first and second that advanced Sonner across the dish. 
 
The hit column was the same in game two as game one with the Mavericks out hitting the Mustangs 6-2. Sonner was 2-for-2 in the game before she existed with a finger injury. 
 
MSU hosts St. Cloud State on Tuesday at the Diamond at Gage for a 3 p.m., NSIC doubleheader showdown.
