MSU Pitching Delivers a No-No and a Two-Hitter to Sweep Wednesday’s Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla.— Minnesota State (13-4) moves to 10-1 on its trip at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee. Fla., as it beat Southern Indiana 1-0 and Seton Hill 7-0.

Senior pitcher Kendra Huettl threw her second career no-hitter Wednesday against Seton Hill. Huettl’s first came when she pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Adams State on Feb. 19, 2011. Huettl has been named the NSIC Pitcher of the Week the past two weeks.

Junior hurler Courtney McKelvogue shined in the first game of the day as she went seven innings, giving up just two hits against Southern Indiana.

The Mavericks went three-up and three-down in the first two innings at the plate before taking advantage of two errors, putting junior shortstop Abby Sonner and freshman outfielder Christina Redd at second and third with one out but were unable to bring them in.

MSU sophomore catcher Lindsay Erickson led off the fourth with a triple but was stranded. Erickson then took matters into her own hands in the bottom of the sixth with a home run, plating the games only run.

In Huettl’s no-hitter, Minnesota State popped the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Lindsay Erickson picked up right where she left of from the previous game as she hit a two-out homer, making her second longball of the day and the season. MSU sophomore Kelly Wood followed with a single and then crossed home after freshman infielder Brittani Robinson singled and Seton Hill made a throwing error.

MSU junior catcher Liz Doppenberg used a walk, a stolen base and then a passed ball to score her and give MSU a 3-0 lead through two innings.

The Minnesota State’s lead extended to 5-0 after a Redd walk and Wood’s fourth homerun of the season in the third inning.

Doppenberg then scored another unearned run for MSU after she singled, stole second and crossed the dish after a fielding error by the left fielder.

Minnesota State scored the final run of the game after Sonner singled then stole second before Doppenberg knocked her in with an RBI single.

Huettl had ten strikeouts on the day facing 23 batters in total. In the last three starts by the senior, she has pitched 21 innings, given two hits and given up one run which was unearned. 

Minnesota State will rematch C.W. Post at 9 a.m. (EST) and Seton Hall at 11 a.m. (EST) on Thursday in Kissimmee, Fla.
