St. Peter, Minn. --- The Minnesota State tennis team opened the 2012 campaign with a convincing 9-0 victory over Bethany Lutheran College Friday evening at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.
The win marked the first for first-year head coach Christie Williams.
Minnesota State opened with a sweep of doubles, with junior Kathryn Gavin and freshman Shealyn Bakke winning 8-0 at the #1 flight. Junior Brandi Dohmen and freshman Joey Bosch won 8-2 at the #2 flight while freshman Laura May and junior Hailey Robb won 8-0 at the #3 flight.
Gavin opened singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top-flight before Dohmen, Bosch and Bakke rattled off 6-0, 6-0 wins at the second third and fourth flights. May won 6-1, 6-0 at the #5 flight while the match ended with Robb winning 6-0, 6-1 at the #6 flight.
The Mavericks (1-0) host the University of Sioux Falls and the University of South Dakota in a doubleheader tomorrow. The match with USF is set to begin at 9 a.m., while the match against the Coyotes starts at 6 p.m.
