Mavericks Welcome Bulldogs, Beavers to Taylor Center

What's Up?: The Minnesota State men's basketball team (7-16, 6-12 NSIC) opens a three-game homestand to close out the regular season portion of its schedule this weekend as it entertains Minnesota Duluth (Friday, 8 p.m.) and Bemidji State (Saturday, 6 p.m.).  Both games can be heard on AM 1230 KYSM The Fan Mankato.

Minnesota State History: The 2011-12 season marks the 90th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men’s basketball. The Mavericks are 1,187-838 (.586) in 2,025 games since the program’s inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 56-25  record (.691) to go with a pair of regular-season championships.
    
The Mavericks have made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, going 12-9 (.571) in those trips.

A Little Bit About Minnesota Duluth: Minnesota Duluth enters the weekend owners of a 13-9 record and are 10-8 in the NSIC, good for seventh-place.  Senior guard Ryan Rasmussen leads the team in scoring at 19.2 points per game while junior guard Jake Hottenstine is averaging 15.9 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds.  Sophomore center Brett Ervin rounds out the Bulldogs in double figures at 12.5 points per game.

As a team, UMD is averaging 80.9 points per game while giving up 80.3.  The Bulldogs are shooting 47 percent from the floor, 38.4 percent from the three-point line and 78.2 percent from the stripe.  Opponents are outrebounding UMD, 36.1-35.9.

Gary Holquist is 205-193 in his career with Minnesota Duluth.

Inside The Series: Minnesota State leads the all-time series, 38-29, while head coach Matt Margenthaler is 13-3 all-time against UMD...Earlier this year, MSU used career-highs from senior guard #Stephen Kirschbaum# (25 points) and freshman post #Zach Romashko# (23 points) to defeat UMD, 89-82...Sophomore guard Jimmy Whitehead leads all Mavericks in career scoring against UMD with ten points per game in three career games...Sophomore forward Connor O'Brien averages 9.3 points and seven rebounds whileKirschbaum averages 6.8 points in five career games.

A Little Bit About Bemidji State: Bemidji State enters the weekend with a 17-7 record and are 12-6 in the NSIC, good for fifth place.

The Beavers are averaging 73.3 points per game while giving up 65.9.  BSU is shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, 38.8 percent from downtown and 73.8 percent from the free throw line while outrebounding its opponents, 32.6-30.4.

Individually, senior forward James Ellisor, the league's leading score, leads BSU in scoring at 21.5 points per game to go with a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game.  Junior guard Dermaine Crockell is averaging 12 points per game to round out the Beavers in double figures.

Matt Bowen owns a 59-100 record with Bemidji State.
    
Inside The Series:  Minnesota State leads the all-time series, 64-40, including a 6-1 mark under head coach Matt Margenthaler...Earlier this season, BSU earned a 75-67 win over the Mavericks in Bemidji...Sophomores Connor O'Brien and Jimmy Whitehead each turned in career-highs in the loss with O'Brien scoring 21 points and Whitehead adding 19...O'Brien leads all active Mavericks with 15 points and 9.7 rebounds in three games against BSU while Whitehead is averaging 8.7 points in three career games.
