Mavericks To Open Homestand Saturday

11/19/2012 1:02:00 PM

What's Up?: The Minnesota State (3-0) returns to the Taylor Center this weekend as it closes the  nonconference portion of its schedule against Mount Marty at 6 p.m.  The game opens a four-game homestand for the Mavericks.

What Just Happened: The Mavericks wrapped up a trip to the West Coast last weekend with two victories in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic hosted by Sonoma State.  Minnesota State opened the two-day event with a 75-68 victory over the host, Sonoma State, before wrapping up with a 86-78 win over San Francisco State.   Senior guard Jarvis Williams was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after averaging 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last weekend, shooting 54.2 percent from the floor.   Junior forward Connor O'Brien was also named to the all-tournament team after averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Its Been a While:  Minnesota State and Mount Marty have played twice before but it's been a while.  The last time MSU played was the lidlifter to the 1978-79 season when Butch Raymond's Mavericks downed the Lancers, 74-66.  The two teams also played during the 1977-78 season with MSU winning 75-68.  The game will serve as an exhibition game for Mount Marty.

Just a Reminder:  Game time for Saturday's game has been moved from 4 p.m., to 6 p.m.

Minnesota State History: The 2012-13 season marks the 91st campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men’s basketball. The Mavericks are 1,188-841 (.586) in 2,029 games since the program’s inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 56-28  record (.667) to go with a pair of regular-season championships.

The Mavericks have made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, going 12-9 (.571) in those trips.

A Little About Mount Marty: Mount Marty enters the week with a 3-3 record.  Prior to coming to Mankato this weekend, the Lancers play at Dordt, Tuesday evening.  As a team, Mount Marty is averaging 72 points per game while giving up 64.8.  Senior guard Joe Hieb leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.4 points per game, while sophomore guard Saladin Smith is averaging ten points per contest.  The Lancers are coached by Jim Thorson who is in his 18th season with the program.
