Mavericks Head to California For Pair of Tests

What's Up?: The Minnesota State (1-0) men's basketball takes to the road for the first time this season as it heads to beautiful Rohnert Park, Calif., to participate in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday evening.  The Mavericks – who are making their second appearance in the event in the last three years – open the classic Friday against the host Seawolves at 9:30 p.m. (PST) before playing San Francisco State Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (PST.)

What Just Happened: The Mavericks opened the 2012-13 season with a convincing 100-42 victory over Bethany Lutheran last Saturday night.  All ten Mavericks scored in the victory led by sophomore forward Zach Romashko's 19 points.

A Quick Fun Facts:  During head coach Matt Margenathler's tenure at Minnesota State, the Mavericks are 4-0 in games played in the Golden State.  The Mavericks are averaging 80.3 points during the four-game span and giving up 59.5 for an average margin of victory of 20.8 points.  Additionally, MSU last played San Francisco State on Dec. 29, 2005 in the Roadrunner Classic hosted by Cal State-Bakersfield, earning an 87-54.  MSU has never played Sonoma State.

Minnesota State History: The 2012-13 season marks the 91st campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men’s basketball. The Mavericks are 1,188-841 (.586) in 2,029 games since the program’s inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 56-28  record (.667) to go with a pair of regular-season championships.
    
The Mavericks have made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, going 12-9 (.571) in those trips.

Little About Sonoma State: Friday's game between Minnesota State and Sonoma State will be the lidlifter for the Seawolves.  SSU played two exhibition games, falling to St. John's 73-55 in Queens, N.Y., and suffering to a 95-69 victory to WCC member Saint Mary's.  In the loss to St. Johns, senior wing Patrick Scott scored a game-high 22 points on 5-of-13 shooting, with all of his field goals coming from beyond the arc.  Additionally, senior forward Ryan Stanley recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.  Sonoma State outrebounded the Red Storm, 41-40 and got to the free throw line twice as much (8-16) as SJU.  In the loss to Saint Mary's, four Seawolves reached double figures led by senior guard Will Olsem's 15 points.  Scott added 12 while senior center Andrew Bolton pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.  Somoma State is coached by Pat Fuscaldo who is in his 19th season with the program and owns a 251-233 record.

A Little About San Francisco State:  The Gators open their season Friday evening against Dominican in the other half of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic. San Francisco State suffered a pair of losses in the exhibition season to NCAA Division I teams, falling to San Francisco, 93-77 and to the University of California, 89-80.  Against the Dons, senior guard Nefi Perdomo scored a team-high 20 points while sophomore guard Robbie Herndon added 19 points.  In the loss to the Bears, Perdomo added 23 points and senior wing Decensae White added 19 points.  The Gators are coached by Paul Trevor who is in his third season with the program and owns a 25-30 record with SFSU and is 195-91 in his career.

Last Time at the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic:  Minnesota State played in the 2010 Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic and won both games, defeating Dominican, 64-51, and Notre Dame de Namur, 88-63.  Juniors Jimmy Whiteheadand Connor O'Brien  – who were redshirt freshman in 2010-11 – each played in both games in Rohnert Park.  O'Brien started both games and averaged 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 53.3 percent from the floor while Whitehead averaged 6.5 points, 2.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 17 minutes of action per game off the bench.  As a team, MSU shot 45.5 percent from the floor during the event and owned a +11 edge on the glass, including a +14 advantage on the offensive end of the floor.
