Mankato, Minn.-  The Minnesota State Mavericks gave a strong performance as they hosted the Augustana Vikings with junior forward Brittany Henry highlighting the 4-1 MSU victory with a two-goal performance on the Thursday afternoon season opener at The Pitch at Gage Towers.

The Mavericks got off to a commanding 2-0 lead as junior forwards Nicole Dooher and Brittany Henry scored for the Mavericks in the nonconference battle. On another positive note, Mavericks junior midfielder Brianne West assisted on both scoring plays for the Mavericks. Dooher scored at 8:35 with Henry’s goal coming at 13:02 minute mark in the first half. Dooher also tallied a assist on Henry’s second goal.

Augastana countered with a goal of its own as forward Jessie Huff crossed a pass over to Midfielder Mackenzie Trom before Trom found the back of the net at 15:51 of the first half. Both Trom and Huff were the only Vikings to contribute offensively.

In the second half, the Mavericks took advantage of a rare opportunity as midfielder Emily Moris scored on a penalty kick at the 58:35 minute mark.

MSU put 11 shots on goal off its 33 shots attempts as Augustana had two shots on goal in its three attempts.

The win put Minnesota State with a 1-0-0 overall record on the season. Following the victory, the Mavericks will host #1 Grand Valley State at The Pitch at Gage Towers on Sunday, Sept., 4 at 12 p.m.
