No. 7 Mavericks Set to Face Beavers and Bulldogs in NSIC Roadtrip

MANKATO, Minn. -- The No. 7 Minnesota State women's soccer team (8-0-1, 5-0-1) is back on the road this weekend as they take on Bemidji State on Friday at 5:00 p.m., and Minnesota Duluth on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. 

The Mavericks are coming off a weekend where they scored 11 goals across two home matches. Last Friday Amara Smith scored a hat trick en route to a 5-0 win over Sioux Falls. Maddix Archer and Ruthie Gyasi both had header goals to add on top of Smith's three.  

Against SMSU on Sunday, six different Mavericks found the back of the net in a 6-0 shutout. Archer and Smith once again found the back of the net while Reese Hilsenbeck, Marin Johnson, Savanna Stockness and Abby Hoiska all scored. The Mavericks outshot the Mustangs 25-8 and earned 11 corner kicks to SMSU's zero.  

With two more shutouts, the Mavericks and Lauren McAlpine sit at eight straight shutouts heading into play this weekend. Smith received NSIC Offensive Player of the Week honors for her impressive four-goal weekend. 

Scouting the Beavers: 

Bemidji State heads into Friday's match with a 4-2-3 record and are 3-1-2 in NSIC play. This past weekend they went 0-1-1 with a 1-1 tie against Minot State and a 0-2 loss to UMary. After giving up a goal in the 82nd minute to Minot State, Grace Schwoch would score in the 86th minute to tie the game back up. 

Schwoch leads the Beavers in goals with two while Ella Wade leads the team in points tallying one goal and four assists for six points. Wade's four assists is tied for the most in the NSIC. As a team, the Beavers have scored ten goals through their nine matches, averaging just under six shots on net per game. They have used a rotation of goalies with Rozlyn Buettner playing the most. She has played in four games and has one shutout, a 1.25 goals against average and a .815 save percentage. As a team the Beavers carry a 0.67 goals against average, a .875 save percentage, and five combined shutouts. 

The Mavericks have the advantage in the all-time series holding a 16-4-5 record. They are 5-3-2 at Bemidji State and 4-2-4 in the last ten matchups. Last season, the teams played to a 2-2 tie at The Pitch, and the last time they faced each other in Bemidji, the Mavericks won in a 3-0 shutout. Across the all-time series, the Mavericks have scored 78 goals, averaging 3.12 a match. 

Scouting the Bulldogs: 

Minnesota Duluth enters the weekend holding a 5-2-2 record and a 4-1-1 record in the NSIC. They went 1-1 last weekend, defeating Minot State 2-0 and losing to UMary 0-1. Lauren McGough scored both goals against Minot State, and she leads the team this season with six goals. Her six goals place her third in the NSIC amongst all players. Nora Helvig second on the team with two goals and six points, while Marissa VanDeHei has the most assists with three. 

Edy Halverson has been the primary goalkeeper for the Bulldogs this season; she has played in eight matches. She has made 31 saves, allowing 0.51 goals a game with a .886 save percentage, while recoding four individual shutouts this season. 

The Mavericks are 26-8-5 all-time against Minnesota Duluth and are on a three-game winning streak. In matches in Duluth, the Mavericks are 8-4-1, and they are 8-0-2 in the last ten matchups. Last season, MSU blanked UMD 3-0 to extend the series' shutout streak to three games. The Bulldogs have not won since 2011 when they shutout the Mavericks 1-0 in Duluth. Across the all-time series, the Mavericks are averaging 1.95 goals per game.
