No. 7 Mavericks Fall to Bulldogs 3-0 For First Loss of the Season

DULUTH, Minn. — Minnesota State lost to Minn. Duluth 3-0 on Sunday at James S. Malosky Stadium. The Mavericks shutout streak was spoiled and they were unable to respond leading to the first loss of the season. The Bulldogs dominated the game as the Mavericks faced a 25-10 shot disadvantage, including 14-5 in shots on goal.

Lauren McAlpine recorded 11 saves in 90 minutes in goal. Amara Smith led the Mavericks with four shots, including two on goal.

Minnesota State spent much of the first half defending Minn. Duluth pressure, with McAlpine making repeated saves to keep the match scoreless until Nora Helvig scored off an Alyssa Doyle assist at 24:45 for a 1-0 Minn, ending a near 1,000 minutes shutout streak. Duluth lead. Earlier, McAlpine stopped shots in the opening minutes and again during a busy stretch from 7:34 to 15:11. Mila Rustin put a shot high at 21:33, and Julia Fischer later had MSU's best recorded look of the half with a shot on frame at 30:24 that was saved by the team, leading to a corner kick. McAlpine added more saves after the opening goal, but Marissa VanDeHei scored on a header from Kamryn Beavers at 40:02, sending the Mavericks into halftime down 2-0.

MSU created multiple second-half chances while trying to cut into a 2-0 deficit, but Minn. Duluth added a goal from Ava Killian at 72:54 to move the score to 3-0. Earlier, Smith put a shot on frame at 46:18, missed left less than a minute later and MSU earned two corner kicks at 46:45 before Maddix Archer sent a shot high left in the 54th minute. The Mavericks kept pressing from 62:56 to 70:44, with Meghan Sullivan, Rustin and Smith each forcing saves from Edy Halverson before Smith added another attempt wide left. After the Minn. Duluth goal, McAlpine saved Alyssa Doyle's shot at 77:51 and Ella Huettl had MSU's final attempt at 83:46, but the half ended with Minn. Duluth finishing a 3-0 result.

Up next, the Minnesota State soccer team looks to bounce back as they host Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m. at The Pitch in Mankato, Minn.
