Box Score Sioux Falls, S.D.— A day after a seven inning comeback, Minnesota State couldn’t repeat itself as it fell 5-0 to Augustana College Friday morning. The Mavericks were outhit 7-5 in the game.
Early on, Minnesota State catcher Lindsay Erickson crushed a ball down the right field line to start the second inning, before being sacrifice bunted to second base by freshman designated player Kelly Wood. MSU shortstop Abby Sonner tagged a hit that spun across the infield to push her to first base and Erickson to third. The Vikings were able to closeout the inning, denying the Mavericks from any runs.
Augustana’s Brittany Coufal and Taylor Kapsch homered in the bottom of the second inning. Coufal’s home run was a two-run shot, knocking in Kelsey Kalkman who walked earlier in the inning. Coufal’s home run put the Vikings up 3-0 after two innings of play.
Minnesota State pitcher #Kendra Huettl# lasted two innings on the mound, giving up three hits on three runs.
Although the Mavericks walked three batters in the bottom of the fourth, they were able to get out of the potential scoring threat.
The Vikings rattled off four hits in a row, including an Elizabeth Murray single, a Traci Fransen double, a Lindsey Spanton single and a Kelsey Kalkman single. Augustana crossed the dish two more times in the inning, expanding its lead 5-0.
In the seventh inning, MSU’s #Lindsay Erickson# led off with a walk, before freshman #Kelly Wood# placed a ball past the pitcher. The following three Mavericks were retired, advancing Augustana with a 5-0 win.
Minnesota State pitcher #Courtney McKelvogue# went four innings, giving up four hits and two runs. Augustana pitcher Ashley Meyer went the distance in her seven-inning, five-hit performance.
Minnesota State sophomore leftfielder #Lauryn Morris# was 2-for-3 in the game.
Thirteenth-Ranked Minnesota State (44-11) will continue action today at 12 p.m., against sixth-seeded Southwest Minnesota State at Bowden field.
