Minnesota State Falls 4-0 to Augustana in Super Regional

Sioux Falls, S.D.-- Minnesota State was downed by Augustana College ,4-0, in game one of the best-of-three series in the NCAA Central Super Regional.

In their fifth meeting of the season, the Mavericks recorded one hit against Vikings pitcher Ashley Meyer. Meyer struck out 11 MSU batters and now stands 4-1 against MSU this season.

Augustana took an early lead as Traci Fransen hit a blooper to right field with Melanie Upchurch diving and missing the ball. MInneosota State shophomore shortstop Abby Sonner took the cut off throw, relaying it to third and hit Fransen in the back with the ball on her way to third.

 Designated player Lindsay Spanton hit a single up the middle as it went off a diving Amanda Umhoefer's glove, scoring Fransen.

Kelsey Kalkman reached on an error, before Durland hit a ball up the middle to score Spanton. Brittany Coufal lined out to third to end the inning as Augustana takes a 2-0 lead.

MSU threatened in the top of the fourth as first baseman Natalie Spicer  walked, while third baseman Julie O'Neal and designated player Lindsay Erickson loading the bases after being hit by pitches. The Vikings retired the next two batters as MSU left three runners on.

Chelsey Durland crushed a home run to give a 3-0 lead to the Vikings in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Augustana’s Jenny Brown perfectly placed a ball on the first base line. Murray hit a ball deep  single down the right field line, putting Brown to third. Fransen knocked a single to left field, scoring Brown and putting runners on first and second. Spanton ended the inning striking out.

Vikings pitcher Ashley Meyer had a no hitter through five innings as Natalie Spicer recorded the first and only MSU hit in the 4-0 Minnesota State loss.

Minnesota State junior pitcher Kendra Huettl went six innings, giving up four runs, seven hits and striking out three batters.

Minnesota State (51-14) returns to action against Augustana (50-9) at 1 p.m., Saturday for game two of the Super Regional in Sioux Falls, S.D.
