Mavericks Pick Up Three Wins

Aberdeen, S.D. ---  The Minnesota State women’s tennis team picked up three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victories Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.

In the opening match the Mavericks downed Northern State by a score of 8-1.

Minnesota State opened the day by taking all three of the doubles points as sophomore Kathryn Gavin and senior Sarah Madigan won by a score of 8-5.  Junior Tegan Bakke and senior #Heather Jensen# earned an 8-5 win at the #2 flight while sophomore #Brandi Dohmen# and freshman #Danni Collins# won by default at the #3 flight.

In singles play, Gavin earned a 4-6, 6-4, 14-12 win at the #2 flight while Jensen won 6-0, 6-1 at the #3 flight.  Dohmen closed out the matches played with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #4 flight.  Bakke and sophomore Jenny Gustafson both won via default at #5 and #6 singles.

In their final two matches of the day, MSU earned a pair of 9-0 shutouts against U-Mary and Bemidji State.

Against the U-Mary, the Mavericks swept the doubles play as Madigan and Gavin earned an 8-2 win at the top-doubles flight .  Dohmen and Collins picked up an 8-1 win at the #2 flight while sophomore Hailey Robb and Gustafson won 8-0 at the #3 flight.

The winning continued in singles play as Madigan won 6-3, 6-1 at the #1 flight.  Gavin picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 while Jensen swept the #3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.  Bakke, Robb and Gustafson all won by scores of 6-0, 6-2, to close out the #4, #5 and #6 singles .

Against Bemidji State, Madigan and Gavin opened doubles play with an 8-1 win at the #1 flight.  Jensen and Bakke picked up an 8-3 win at the #2 flight  and Dohmen and Collins won 9-8 (10-6) at the # 3 flight.

In singles play, Madigan won 6-3, 6-1 at the #1 flight while Gavin earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the #2 flight.  Jensen picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at the #3 position while Dohmen won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at #4.  Bakke finished her day with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #5 flight and Robb finished the shutout with a 7-5 (10-5), 6-0 win at the #6 flight.

Minnesota State concludes play in Aberdeen tomorrow against Winona State.
