4/5/2011 8:57:26 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  Mankato, Minn.— Minnesota State’s eight-game winning streak would come to an end Tuesday, losing 5-0 and 2-1 to Wayne State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game. The losses give MSU its first two losses in NSIC play, dropping its overall record to 27-6.
In game one, WSC opened on the first pitch of the game with a double by Aeriell Earleywine. Earleywine would eventually score on the next play due from a muffed throw on a sacrifice bunt.
Neither team would score again until the seventh inning as Wayne State broke open the game in the top of the seventh inning. The Wildcats would add four runs in the seventh to give them a five run cushion on MSU.
Lindsay Erickson and Julie O’Neal got the only hits for the Mavericks in the game.
Sophomore pitcher Courtney McKelvogue would go seven innings, finishing with six strikeouts, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. The loss drops McKelvogue to 13-3 on the season.
MSU junior pitcher Kendra Huettl would get the start in game two of the doubleheader against WSC. Her seven inning, ten strikeout performance wouldn’t be enough for the Mavericks to capture a win.
Early on, Wayne State’s Samantha Earleywine would crush a ball out in dead centerfield. The homerun gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead as the Mavericks left two runners on in the bottom of the first inning.
MSU would tie the game up in the second inning, as freshman Kelly would hit a double to the left centerfield fence. After Amanda Umhoefer was hit by a pitch, leadoff hitter Melanie Upchurch would generate a five pitch walk to load the bases up. Lauryn Morris would get an RBI walk, guiding in the only Maverick run of the day.
In the fifth inning, senior Natalie Spicer was a few feet away from putting the Mavericks up a run when she hit a two-out double off the wall in right centerfield.
The Wildcats would tally the game-winning run in the sixth inning on a bases loaded, two out, fielders choice play.
This marks Huettl’s third loss of the year as she stands 12-3 on the season.
Minnesota State would earn five hits in the game, with freshman Kelly Wood getting two doubles and scoring the lone run of the day.
Minnesota State (27-6, 4-2 NSIC) will head north this weekend for its first NSIC road games of the season. The Mavericks take on MSU Moorhead on Saturday, before heading to Minnesota, Crookston Sunday, Both games are doubleheaders and scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
