Minneapolis, Minn. – The Minnesota State women’s tennis team – seeded fifth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament – opened the 2011 event with a 5-4 upset over archrival St. Cloud State, the fourth seed.
The win pushed MSU into the semifinals against top-seeded Augustana, which earned a first-round bye. The Vikings earned a 5-1 victory, eliminating MSU from the tournament.
Against SCSU, the Mavericks opened with a pair of points in doubles play as senior
Heather Jensen and junior
Tegan Bakke earned an 8-5 win at the #2 flight. Sophomores
Brandi Dohmen and
Danni Collins added a 9-8 (8-6) victory at the #3 position.
The Mavericks earned wins at the bottom-three singles flight to secure the win but they had to work for it.
Bakke opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tanya Halloran at the #5 spot, pushing MSU’s advantage to 3-1. St. Cloud State answered with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the #3 flight and a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) win at the #1 flight, knotting the match at three.
The Huskies then took a 6-4, 6-3 win at the #2 flight to open a 4-3 advantage.
Sophomore
Jenny Gustafson picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at the #6 flight to tie the match before Dohmen sealed the Maverick victory with a come-from-behind victory at the #4 spot, earning a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
In the match against Augustana, the Vikings swept doubles play to race to a 3-0 lead.
The Vikings would pick up two more wins in singles play to seal the win. MSU’s lone victory came as Jensen earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at the #3 flight.
Minnesota State now awaits the NCAA Regional tournament announcement which will be made Tuesday evening.
