Mavericks Split; Winning Streak Stopped at 12 Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla. --- The 23rd-ranked Minnesota State split its games at the Rebel Spring games Wednesday, falling to Indiana (Pa), 4-3, before upending Southern Indiana, 8-3.

In the opener, the Mavericks jumped on the board first as junior rightfielder Melanie Upchurch singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt took Upchurch to third before she came around to score on a bunt-single off the bat of senior first baseman Natalie Spicer.

IUP answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead before the Mavericks rallied for a run in the bottom of the fifth as Upchurch again singled to lead off the inning and stole second. A sacrifice bunt moved Upchurch to third before she scored on a single off the bat of Spicer.

Both teams scored a run in the sixth, MSU's coming via a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore shortstop Abby Sonner, scoring sophomore pinch runner Eryn Edgerton who entered the game after freshman designated player Lindsay Erickson singled.

The Crimson Hawks used an unearned run in the top of the seven to plate the game winning run, snapping MSU' 12-game winning streak.

Sophomore pitcher Courtney McKelvogue suffered her first loss of the season in the game, as she went the distance allowing eight hits while striking out eight.

Upchurch led the Mavericks at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort, while Spicer added two hits in three trips while driving in two runs.

In the second game, the Mavericks raced to a 5-0 advantage en route holding on for an 8-3 win. Upchurch hit a one-out double scoring sophomore Chelsie Krull who had earlier reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore leftfielder Lauryn Morris grounded out to first, scoring Upchurch before Spicer drew a two-out walk

Senior third baseman Julie O'Neal followed with a single to center before both came around to score when junior Chelsea Erickson homered to left center, giving MSU a 5-0 lead.

MSU added runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh to seal the win. Chelsea Erickson, O'Neal and freshman designated player Kelly Wood all went 2-for-3 from the plate with Erickson driving in three runs and Wood driving in two.

Minnesota State (15-2) continues action tomorrow as it plays Lake Erie at 3 p.m. (EST) and Holy Family at 5 p.m. (EST).
