Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla. --- The Minnesota State softball team extended its winning streak to ten games as it continued action in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Mavericks opened the day with a 5-1 win over Saginaw Valley and wrapped up action Sunday with an 8-2 win over Bellarmine.
In the opener, MSU raced to a 4-0 lead after two and half innings, thanks to a three-run top of the third. Sophomore leftfielder
Lauryn Morris opened the inning with a single up the middle and then stole second. Senior first baseman
Natalie Spicer followed Morris with a walk and both came around to score on a double off the bat of senior third baseman Julie O'Neal.
Sophomore pinch runner
Chloe Minkel entered to run for O'Neal and would score on an RBI single off the bat of junior center fielder Chelsea Erickson.
The four-run cushion was all MSU starter
Courtney McKelvogue would need as she went the distance to earn the win, scattering four hits while striking out seven.
O'Neal led the Mavericks at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort with four RBI while Morris added two hits and a run scored.
In the second game of the day, MSU raced to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Junior rightfielder
Melanie Upchurch opened the bottom of the first with a walk and promptly stole second. Morris followed with another walk and after a successful double-steal both would come around to score as Spicer singled.
Spicer, who reached third on a scoring error following her single, then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of O'Neal pushing the MSU lead to 3-0. MSU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as sophomore catcher
Liz Doppenberg blasted her first home run of the season. Fellow sophomore
Abby Sonner then singled and moved to second on an error off the bat of junior second baseman
Amanda Umhoefer. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, Sonner would score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Morris.
MSU added another run in the third as Sonner blasted an RBI double plating Doppenberg. Freshman designated player
Lindsay Erickson homered in the fifth and O'Neal hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth –which plated Morris who had earlier singled – to cap the Maverick scoring.
Junior pitcher
Kendra Huettl worked 6.1 innings to earn the win allowing five hits while striking out six. Freshman
Kristen Fah worked the final two innings to secure the victory.
Minnesota State (12-1) plays Northern Kentucky at 11 a.m. (EST) tomorrow and California (Pa) at 1 p.m. (EST).
