St. Peter, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team opened the 2011 season Friday as they defeated Northern State, 8-1, and swept Bethany Lutheran, 9-0.

In the opener, MSU swept the doubles competitions before earning five of the six wins in singles play.

Sophomore Jenny Gustfason wonbyinjury default to open play at the #6 slot and was followed by senior Heather Jensen earning a pair of 6-0 love victories to secure MSU’s fifth win of the night – and the match. MSU continued to pick up victories as junior Tegan Bakke won 6-2, 6-3 at the #5 slot and was followed by sophomore Brandi Dohmen who won 6-2, 6-4 at the #3 spot. The final win of the night came at the spot when sophomore Kathryn Gavin won 6-4, 6-3 at the #2 spot.

In the nightcap,  the Mavericks raced to a three wins in doubles action. The singles play much like the first as senior Sarah Madigan won 6-0, 6-1 at the #1 flight. Gavin picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at #2 singles and was followed by Dohmen’s 6-0, 6-0 win at the #3 flight. Jensen earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles and sophomore Dani Collins won 6-1, 6-0 at the #5 flight. Sophomore Hailey Robb closed out the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the #6 spot.

The Mavericks play Minnesota, Crookston tomorrow at 9 am and Martin Luther tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
