Seventh-Seeded Mavericks Open WCHA-Playoffs at Second-Seeded Minnesota Duluth

Mankato, Minn.--- The seventh-seeded Minnesota State Mavericks (8-23-3 overall, 7-20-1-0 WCHA) travels to Duluth, Minn. to face the second-seeded and fifth-rated Minnesota Duluth bulldogs (20-7-3 overall, 18-7-3-0 WCHA) in the first-round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.The Mavericks and Bulldogs will take part in a best-of-three series with the winner advancing to the WCHA Final Face-Off. The two teams are slated to face-off Friday at 7:07 p.m., Saturday at 7:07 p.m. and if necessary, Sunday at 7:07 p.m. at Minnesota Duluth’s AMSOIL Arena.

Maverick v. Bulldog History:

- The Minnesota State Mavericks are owners of a 4-42-3 overall record against Minnesota Duluth with its most recent win coming last season when MSU scored the game-winner with :34 left.
- MSU went 0-4-0 against UMD this season...MSU was swept on the road with a 5-2 loss on 10/16 and  a 6-0 loss on 10/17, then swept at home with a 7-0 loss on 2/4 and a 3-0 loss on 2/5.
- The two goals scored in Minnesota State’s 5-2 loss gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead after the first period and were scored by junior forward
Emmi Leinonen (assisted by Junior Moira O’Connorand junior Jackie Otto) and freshman forward Kathleen Rogan (assisted by Lauren Zrust); both their first goals of the season.
- Minnesota State has four active players that have scored goals against the Bulldogs: Senior forward
Nina Tikkinen has tallied three, with senior forward Lisa Edman, Rogan and Leinonen each having scored one goal.
- Tikkinen also leads all active players in points against UMD with five (3-2--5).

A Look at the Bulldogs: 

- The #6 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs own a 20-7-3 overall record with a 18-7-3-0 mark in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and finished the season second in the conference.
- UMD finished the season by sweeping St. Cloud State at home, with scores of 8-0 on 2/18 and 9-0 on 2/19...UMD finished the season winning their final eight games and overtaking the #2 seed.
- They have recorded 121 goals to their opponents 49 goals...Minnesota Duluth has scored 33 goals in the first period, 46 in the second and 42 in the third.
- UMD has tallied 1,168 shots to its opponents 769 shots.
- The Bulldogs are 32/148 (.216) on the power play, while its opponents are 15/132 (.114).
- Minnesota Duluth has 16 skaters that have had at least one goal and have had 20 skaters that have had at least one point this season.
- UMD is led by senior forward Elin Holmlov (16-30--46), junior forward Haley Irwin (18-24--42), sophomore forward Jessica Wong (13-23--36) and sophomore forward Pernilla Winberg (13-20--33).
- Freshman forward Brienna Gillanders owns a team-high eight power play goals.
- Senior defenseman Jocelyne Larocque leads the team in penalties with 25 for 50 minutes.
- Minnesota Duluth is led in net by senior Kim Martin who owns a team-best 13-5-0 record, a 1.42 G.A.A., a .945 save percentage and 426 saves.
- The Bulldogs are coached by Shannon Miller who is in her 12th season as the leader of the Minnesota Duluth’s program...Owner of a 297-78-31 record while coaching the Bulldogs.
