St. Peter, Minn. --- Minnesota State junior #2 singles player Marco Vazquez earned a 6-3, 3-6, 10-1 victory at #2 singles to clinch the Mavericks 5-4 victory over rival Augustana Sunday morning.
With the match tied at four, Vazquez opened with a 6-3 victory in the first set before falling by the same score in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Vazquez allowed only one point, an unforced error, in earning the victory for himself and the Mavericks.
Augustana opened the day with a pair of wins in doubles play as the Vazquez and freshman Xue Chang won at #2 doubles , 8-5, earning MSU's sole doubles victory.
Singles play saw the Mavericks open with a 6-3, 6-0 win by sophomore #1 player Mitch Barr. Sophomore Mike Lindaman earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision at #5 singles and freshman Matt Jameson followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the #6 slot to tie the match at three.
The Vikings answered with a 6-1, 6-2 decision at #3 singles and a 6-2, 6-0 victory at #4 to set up Vazquez’s heroics.
Minnesota State (2-2) travels to St. Cloud State Thursday for a 3 p.m., tilt.
