Box Score Houghton, Mich. --- The Minnesota State men’s basketball team was limited to 33.9 field goal percentage as it suffered a 74-63 loss to Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon.
“We have got to learn from this loss,” said head coach
Matt Margenthaler. “We have to get better in a short week before we head to Florida.”
Minnesota State raced to a 12-0 lead to open the game as junior guard
DJ Hoskins hit a three-point basket from the top of the key to open the scoring. Sophomore guard
Jimmy Whitehead added a lay-up and Hoskins hit another three before freshman post
Zach Romashko hit a jumper from the left wing. The run ended with a putback by sophomore forward
Connor O'BrienThe Maverick defense continued to be stingy as the Huskies didn’t hit their first field goal until the 12:56 mark, cutting the score to 12-4. The Huskies found some momentum with their first field goal as they used a 17-2 run to take a 19-14 lead with 5:25 left in the first half.
From that point on, both teams played even as MTU took a 30-26 lead into the half. Hoskins led all p layers with ten first half points while freshman guard
Kelly Madison added eight off the bench.
The Huskies opened an 11 point lead midway through the second half and played with the a double-digit lead for much of the remainder.
Madison led MSU with 16 points while Hoskins added 12 and O’Brien added 10 points and nine rebounds. MTU won the battle of
the boards, 37-35.
Minnesota State returns to action next week as it plays Armstrong Atlantic Friday afternoon at 5:15 p.m. (EST) in Lakeland, Fla.
