What Lies Ahead: The Minnesota State travels to St. Cloud State to face the Huskies for the 75th game between the two programs. The contest, a game in which the winner receives the illustrious Traveling Training Kit, is set to begin at 1 p.m., in Husky Stadium.
A Little History Lesson: The 2011 season marks the school's 85th season playing football. The Mavericks are 377-373-28 (.503) in 778 games since their inception as a varsity sport in 1922. Minnesota State is in its fourth season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and owns a 27-7 record in league action. Over the course of its history, MSU has claimed 17 conference championships including 15 NIC titles.
What's in a Win: A win would give MSU its 378th win in school history...A victory would be the 30th victory for head coach
Todd Hoffner at MSU and the 76th victory of his career...A win would give MSU its 28th victory in the Northern Sun Conference...A victory would mark the second win against St. Cloud State for Hoffner and his first in the Granite City...A win would mark MSU's 32nd win in the series against St. Cloud State as the Huskies own a 40-31-4 record in the rivalry....A win would mark MSU's second-best start under Hoffner (5-1) with the 6-0 start in 2009 proving to be the only better start.
Scouting St. Cloud State: St. Cloud State enters Saturday's game ranked #17 in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll and is coming off a 27-14 win over Northern State last weekend.
Sophomore quarterback Phillip Klaphake connected on 9-of-15 passes for 192 yards and two scores in the victory one of which came on a 69-yard strike to sophomore Eli Shoemaker. Junior Brandon Geiss added 13 carries for 112 yards in the win. Defensively, senior linebacker Mark Martin added 12 stops, ten of which were solo.
For the season, the Huskies are averaging 207.8 yards per game on the ground while throwing for 201.2 for a total offense of 409.0 per game. Geiss leads all Husky rushers with 52 carries for 327 yards and three scores, averaging 65.4 yards per game and 6.3 yards per carry. Klaphake has completed 78-of-114 passes for 947 yards and six scores — and six interceptions — averaging 189.4 yards per game while Shoemaker leads the team with 13 receptions for 219 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, junior defensive back Marvin Matthew leads the team with 28 tackles, including two interceptions, five pass break-ups. The Huskies are coached by Scott Underwood who is in his fourth season with the program and the owner of a 28-11 record.

The Third One Maybe the Most Important: Minnesota State and St. Cloud State enter Saturday's game ranked 1-2 respectively in the league in third down conversions (56.8 and 47.3). On the flip side, St. Cloud State is leading the league in opposing third down conversions (29.2) while MSU is fourth at 33.8.
