What Lies Ahead: The Minnesota State football team opens its final homestand of the season Saturday as it plays Wayne State in its first of two football games over six days. The game also represents Parents Day for the football team as the parents of the program will be honored at halftime. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
Pink and Purple: The Minnesota State football program urges fans who are attending Saturday to wear the color pink along with their Maverick gear to the game as MSU plans to pay tribute to breast cancer awareness month.
A Little History Lesson: The 2011 season marks the school's 85th season playing football. The Mavericks are 378-374-28 (.503) in 780 games since their inception as a varsity sport in 1922. Minnesota State is in its fourth season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and owns a 28-7 record in league action. Over the course of its history, MSU has claimed 17 conference championships including 15 NIC titles.
What's in a Win: A win would give MSU its 379th win in school history...A victory would be the 30th victory for head coach
Todd Hoffner at MSU and the 76th victory of his career...A win would give MSU its 28th victory in the Northern Sun Conference...A win would give MSU a 4-0 record all-time against Wayne State, including a 2-0 mark in the city of Mankato...It would also secure MSU's 46th winning season in program history.
The Last Time: The last time Minnesota State recorded four consecutive winning seasons came from the 1991-94 seasons under then head coach Dan Runkle...MSU's longest streak of consecutive winning seasons came from 1967 to 1974 when Bob Otto and John Coatta combined to coach seven straight winning programs.
Scouting Wayne State: Wayne State enters the weekend owners of a 5-2 record and join Minnesota State as one of the five teams tied for the NSIC lead with a 5-1 mark.
Last weekend, the Wildcats suffered their conference loss of the year as they fell to Concordia, 27-24 in St. Paul.
For the season, Wayne State is averaging 29.4 points per game while giving up 22.1 and offensively it has been outgained on average, 397.4 to 347.
Junior running back Nick Pulscher leads the team in rushing averaging 77.6 yards per game and 4.2 yards per carry. He also has a team-high six touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback Nate Most has completed 64-of-126 passes for 841 yards and nine touchdowns and is averaging 120.1 yards per game in the air. Senior wideout Mitch Montgomery has caught 27 passes for a team-high 534 yards and is averaging 76.3 yards per game and 19.8 yards per catch to go with his four touchdowns.
Defensively, redshirt freshman Nick Monzu leads the team with 55 stops to go with an interception, forced fumble, fumble recovery and 2.5 tackles for a loss. The Wildcats are coached by Dan McLaughlin.
