Box Score Sioux Falls, S.D. – The fifth-seeded Minnesota State softball team concluded its suspended game against sixth-seeded Minnesota Duluth Saturday morning, with the Bulldogs earning a 6-4 victory to end the Maverick’s run in the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament.
Yesterday, the Bulldogs opened a 3-2 advantage through three innings before the game was suspended due to frigid temperatures.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the top of the fourth when they picked up a pair of unearned runs. Minnesota State – who is ranked #24 in the nation – responded in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs as senior catcher Kelsey Thompson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in senior second baseman Abby Morris who earlier reached on an infield hit.
Junior third baseman Julie O'Neal then reached on an error, which scored junior first baseman Natalie Spicer, cutting the score to 6-5.
Minnesota Duluth added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl took the loss for the Mavericks as she went the distance allowing 11 hits and six runs – four of which were earned. She also struck out six batters in the loss.
Spicer led the Mavericks at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance, including three infield hits.
The Mavericks (34-13) await their postseason fate Monday morning when the NCAA releases the field for the 2010 NCAA Central Region tournament.
