Colorado Springs, Colo. – The second-seeded Minnesota State Mavericks battled the first-seeded Metro State Roadrunners in the championship round of the NCAA subregionals in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sunday afternoon falling, 6-0.
Metro State opened the game with a 6-0 lead hitting a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second. The Roadrunners hit another two-run homer to center field in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded a walk-in run followed by another run brought in as the batter was hit by the pitch.
The Mavericks had the bases loaded in the top of the fourth with their chance to bring the game within two runs, but a double-play at home and first would shut-down the opportunity.
Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl pitched two innings allowing five runs off three hits while striking out two, taking the loss and finishing the season with a 17-10 record.
Redshirt freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue came in relief for the last three innings allowing one run off three hits, McKelvogue finishes her season 19-5.
In the NCAA subregional tournament the Mavericks shattered the single-season home run record, set last season (48), by nine home runs, the record now sits at 57. In the four games Minnesota State drilled 12 home runs, 11 coming against Winona State. Junior Julie O'Nealand sophomore Amanda Umhoefer both posted three home runs. .
Minnesota State finishes the season 36-15 overall in Colorado Springs, Colo., for their ninth appearance in the NCAA tournament and fourth consecutive appearance.
