Colorado Springs, Colo. – The second-seeded Minnesota State softball team, ranked 24th nationally, fell to first-seeded Metro State Saturday evening, 7-1.
The Roadrunners started off with a 7-0 lead bringing the first run in at the bottom of the second off a single through the right side. Metro State then tallied six runs in the bottom of the fourth off a drop fly to first followed by a three run homer to left center and a two-run homer to right center.
The Mavericks brought their only run in as junior Natalie Spicer drilled a home run down the left field line in the top of the sixth inning, her seventh of the season.
Minnesota State closed the game out with one run off six hits and one error, while Metro State posted seven runs off seven hits and no errors.
Redshirt freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue pitched four innings allowing six runs off seven hits, while striking out five. McKelvogue takes the loss and falls to 19-5.
Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl pitched two innings with one hit while striking out three.
The Mavericks (35-14) will take on Winona State in elimination game at 9 p.m. tonight. The winner will advance to the championship game tomorrow at 12 p.m.
