Mankato, Minn.—The Minnesota State softball team pushed it winning streak to 10 games Monday afternoon as the Mavericks picked up a pair of victories, 14-1 and 11-0, over Minnesota, Crookston for their last home games of the season.
In game one of the doubleheader, Minnesota State jumped to a 3-0 lead through three innings, earning one run each inning.
In the bottom of the first senior second basemen Abby Morris tallied the first run after reaching on a walk, stealing second and a sacrifice bunt would bring her in. At the bottom of the second sophomore leftfielder Chelsea Erickson led off with a double to left field, advancing to third on a ground-out before sophomore Katie Kruse singled to left field, bringing Erickson in.
Minnesota State dominated the bottom of the fourth with 11 runs off 10 hits. Junior first basemen Natalie Spicer drilled a grand slam to center field, for her third home run of the season. Kruse would tally a two-run double to left center before senior shortstop Libbie Reichling would blast another grand slam to left center, her fifth home run of the season.
The Golden Eagles brought one run in at the top of the fifth off one hit.
Spicer went 1-for-3 at the plate with five runs batted in. Reichling finished the game with a 2-for-2 performance with four runs batted in.
Redshirt freshman pitcher Courtney McKelvogue pitched four complete innings to earn the win, her 14th of the season. She scattered four hits and struck out nine. Freshman Jenna Peterson pitched the top of the fifth inning allowing one run off one hit, while striking out two.
The Mavericks took control of game two, shutting out the Golden Eagles with one run in the second, six in the third and four more in the fourth.
Sophomore rightfielder Amanda Umhoefer brought one run in at the bottom of the second with a single up the middle. In the bottom of the third Reichling opened up with a double to left center followed by a home run to left field by senior catcher Kelsey Thompson, her eighth of the season, bringing three runs in. Junior third basemen Julie O'Neal hit a double to left field before freshman Abby Sonner singled through up the middle bringing O’Neal in. Umhoefer brought another runner in off a double to left field.
Spicer opened the bottom of the fourth with a triple to left field before being brought in off a sacrifice fly. Four more singles would bring in the three remaining runs.
McKelvogue pitched the first three innings, earning the win and improving her record to 15-3, scattering two hits while striking out four. Kruse pitched the final two innings with two hits while striking out one.
The Mavericks (29-9, 15-5 NSIC) hit the road to take on Augustana in a doubleheader Wednesday, first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
