Duluth, Minn.—The Minnesota State softball team swept the Bulldogs in NSIC action today on the road, defeating Minnesota Duluth in game one, 5-4 (eight innings) and 4-3 in game two.
Minnesota Duluth tallied the first two runs in the bottom of the second off two hits with one MSU error.
The Mavericks sophomore Chelsea Erickson tripled to right center in the top of the third bringing three runners in. Minnesota State earned three runs off one hit and no errors.
In the top of the sixth junior Julie O'Neal singled to left field, followed by a triple to left field by freshman Jenna Peterson, bringing O’Neal in for the run.
The Bulldogs struck back in the bottom of the sixth with a double to center field followed by a home run. Minnesota Duluth tallied two runs tying the game at 4-4
In the top of the eighth the Maverick freshman Chelsie Krull singled to right field, bringing Peterson to the plate, Peterson singled to left center. Two sacrifice bunts brought Krull in for the run.
Minnesota State tallied five runs off eight hits and two errors, while the Bulldogs had four runs off eight hits.
Sophomore pitcher Kendra Huettl pitched all eight innings with four runs off eight hits while striking out nine. Huettl improves her record to 10-6.
In game two the Mavericks brought in the first runs in the top of the fourth as senior Kelsey Thompson hit her fourth home run of the season. Minnesota State then tallied three more runs in the top of the fifth, with two Bulldog errors and a sacrifice fly bringing one runner in. Thompson drilled a single to center field, bringing two more runners in, MSU led the Bulldogs 4-0.
Duluth answered back in the bottom of the fifth with three singles bringing two runners in. The Bulldogs grabbed one more run in the bottom of the seventh off a single and a double.
The Mavericks earned four runs off six hits and two errors while the Bulldogs fell short with three runs off seven hits and three errors.
Freshman Courtney McKelvogue pitched the seven innings allowing only three runs off seven hits while striking out five. McKelvogue improves her record to 11-3.
Minnesota State (21-9, 7-5 NSIC) travels to Bemidji, Minn. to battle the Beavers in a doubleheader tomorrow, first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
