St. Peter, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team downed league rival Minnesota Duluth, 7-2, Sunday morning in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both squads played at the Gustavus Tennis Center.
The Mavericks raced to an early 3-0 after sweeping doubles play. The #2 doubles team of senior Paige Burke and junior Heather Jensen opened the competition with an 8-2 victory while senior Cassandra Anderson and sophomore Teagan Bakke won 8-4 at the #3 flight. Junior Sarah Madigan and freshman Kathryn Gavin closed out the doubles portion of the dual with an 8-3 win at the top-flight.
In singles play, MSU sealed the win with victories at the #6 and #4 positions. Jensen opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #6 spot and was followed by Burke’s 6-1, 6-1 win at the #4 slot. Gavin tallied MSU’s sixth team-point of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the #2 position before freshman Brandi Dohman rounded out the Maverick scoring with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #3 singles.
The Mavericks return to action with a Valentine’s morning dual against Southwest Minnesota State next Sunday in St. Peter at the Gustavus Tennis Center.
