St. Peter, Minn. – The Minnesota State women’s tennis team opened the 2010 season with a 9-0 victory over Bethany Lutheran College Friday evening at the Gustavus Tennis Complex on the campus of Gustvus Adolphus College.
The Mavericks swept the doubles competition as the #1 doubles tandem of senior Sarah Madigan and freshman Kathryn Gavin earned an 8-1 victory. The Mavericks also won at #2 doubles, 8-1, behind stellar play from senior Paige Burke and junior Heather Jensen. The third doubles team of senior Cassandra Anderson and sophomore Tegan Bakke won 8-0.
In singles action, Madigan opened play with 6-0, 6-0 victory over Elizabeth Kopacek at #1 singles. Sophomore Carly Hiedeman won 6-4, 6-1 at #5 doubles followed by sophomore Brittany Hoban with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the #6 slot.
At #4 singles, Baake earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory and that was followed by freshman Brandi Dohmen’s 6-0, 6-3 victory at the #2 slot. Jensen secured the shutout with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the #3 position.
Minnesota State (1-0) plays Martin Luther Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Gustavus Tennis Center.
