St. Peter, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday, falling to NSIC Conference foe Upper Iowa, 6-3, before defeating Gustavus, 5-4. Both matches were played at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.
Against Upper Iowa, MSU raced to a 2-1 lead after doubles as junior Heather Jensen and senior Paige Burke earned an 8-4 win at the #2 flight. In #3 doubles, senior Cassandra Anderson and junior Heather Jensen earned an 8-3 victory.
In singles play, Anastasia Dabiza, ranked #42 in the nation, opened play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over MSU junior Sarah Madigan. Jensen answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #6 singles to push the MSU advantage to 3-2.
The Peacocks then closed out the match with four consecutive victories to earn the win. At #3 singles, freshman Brand Dohmen fell to Mallery Cox, 6-1, 6-7 (7-4), 10-7, while Anderson fell at #5 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10.
In the nightcap, MSU again earned wins at #2 and #3 doubles to stake an early 2-1 lead.
Dohmen opened singles action with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the #3 slot. GAC answered with a win at the #1 flight before Jensen earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at #6. The Mavericks sealed the win as Burke downed Mallory Schllum, 6-4, 2-6, 10-3 at the #4 spot.
Minnesota State (7-1, 4-1 NSIC) hosts Augustana Sunday morning.
