Mavericks at #5 Minnesota Duluth to Open WCHA Action this Weekend

MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State women’s hockey team finished the opening weekend 1-0-1 and will open Western Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend at Minnesota Duluth. Saturday and Sunday’s contests are both slated to start at 3:07 p.m.

Program History: The 2010-11 season will mark the 13th year of women’s hockey as a varsity sport at Minnesota State…The Mavericks currently hold a 121-252-38 (.343) all-time record.

Follow the Leader:
Junior defenseman
Ariel Mackley will serve as the team captain this season, with juniors forward Moira O’Connor and junior defenseman Jackie Otto as the alternate captains.

A Look at the Bulldogs: The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs began their NCAA National Title defense with a home exhibition series agasint the Minnesota White Caps...The bulldogs defeated the Whitecaps in a shootout in the first contest, then downed them 6-4 in regulation in the second...last weekend, the defending champs then opened WCHA action against the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux in Grand Forks, N.D...The two teams split with the Bulldogs taking game one, 4-0, then dropped the second contest, 4-2...Three Bulldogs are tied at the top of UMD’s points list, those players include: senior forward Haley Irwin (2-1--3), sophomore forward Jessica Wong (1-2--3) and senior defenseman Jocelyne Larocque (1-2--3)...In net for Minnesota Duluth is senior Kim Martin...Martin owns all of UMD’s minutes (119:57), has allowed four goals, owns a 2.00 goals against average, 38 saves and has a .905 save percentage.

MSU/UMD History:
The Minnesota State women’s hockey team holds a  4-38-3 all-time record against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs...The two teams played four games last season...The Mavericks picked up their fourth win against the Bulldogs in Duluth after a game-winner that was scored with little time on the clock.
