Mavericks Drop Contest To Warriors

         Winona, Minn. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks were defeated by the Warriors of Winona State, Saturday evening, 77-64, in Winona, Minn. 

Sophomore center Laura Weber won the tip-off for the Mavericks but missed the opening shot and allowed the Warriors to open up with a three-point shot. Earning the first points for the Mavericks senior forward Liz Trauger drilled a jumper followed by an open three by sophomore guard Lauren Barber to tie the game.  

 

At the 10:00 minute mark of the half Trauger drilled a three to give the Mavericks their first lead of the game. The Warriors and Mavericks battled within two-points until the Warriors scored seven points in the final two minutes of the half to give the Mavericks a six point deficit at the half, 38-32.

 

Minnesota State was led in the first half by senior guard Tiffany Moe with 12 points and Trauger with seven points. MSU brought down 11 rebounds and tallied 10 assists in the half. At the half the Mavericks were shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the arc.      

 

The Mavericks started the second half as sophomore guard Jennie Noreen stole the ball from the Warriors and scored a fast-break lay-up. The Warriors pulled the lead further after drilling seven shots from the arc in the second half. The Mavericks came back within six points with seven minutes left in the half, but didn’t prove to be enough as the Warriors took the largest lead at 4:29 after scoring a three, to lead by 12 points.

 

The Mavericks ended the game shooting 37 percent from the field and 24.1 from the arc against the Warriors 50 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the arc.

 

Maverick leaders were; Trauger with a career-high of 21 points, Moe with 18 points and Noreen and Weber with eight points.  MSU was outrebounded by the Warriors 45-30. While MSU dished out 21 assists and grabbed eight steals.

 

The Mavericks now 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the NSIC, will return home to host the Golden Bears of Concordia University, Friday Jan. 15, at 6 p.m.
