Crookston, Minn.—The Minnesota State Mavericks defeated Minnesota, Crookston Sunday afternoon in their final regular season match, 8-1.
The Mavericks posted eight shots in the first period. Leading off the Mavericks with the first goal of the match, after only three minutes of play, freshman forward Brittany Henry (Stillwater, Minn.) drilled one in assisted by freshman midfielder Brianne West (Omaha, Neb.) and senior midfielder Gina Paletta (Omaha, Neb.). Four minutes later Henry earned her second goal of the match, fifth on the season, at 7:18 assisted by West and senior defender, Kristen Carpentier (Lakeville, Minn.). Scoring the last goal of the first period at 15:42 junior forward Laura Leber (Council Bluffs, Iowa), for her 11th goal of the season. Minnesota, Crookston posted one lone shot in the first period.
Starting off a dominating second period, at 55:22 senior forward Kristen Coughlin (Burnsville, Minn.) posted the fourth goal of the match, assisted by senior midfielder Natalie Bullis (Madison, Wis.) for her second assist of the season. A short minute later at 56:42 sophomore forward Sarah Schellinger (Sartell, Minn.) earned her first goal of the season, third career goal, assisted by Coughlin. At 65:59 freshman forward Kate Nielsen (Urbandale, Iowa) earned the sixth goal of the match assisted by Coughlin. Following up on her own goal at 67:01 Nielsen tallied another goal, for her fifth goal of the season, assisted by sophomore midfielder Jacque Ackerman (Maple Grove, Minn.) and senior midfielder Courtney Magnuson (Rosemount, Minn.) for her first assist of the season. Finishing off the goal scoring for the Mavericks at 71:57 Coughlin posts her second goal of the match and third on the season. The Mavericks posted a total of 24 shots with 17 on goal throughout the match. Crookston scored their lone goal at 77:32, off a header.
Senior goalkeeper Sheila Reynolds (St. Charles, Ill.) tallied one save in the first period. Tending the goal in the second period for the Mavericks was freshman goalkeeper Natalie D’Adamio (Littleton, Colo.) earning one save and giving up her first goal.
The Mavericks finish of the regular season 13-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in NSIC. The Mavericks finished fourth in the NSIC and will take on the University of Mary, Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in quarterfinal action. The match will be held at The Pitch.
