Joe Klein was named the assistant coach for the Minnesota State volleyball team on January 23, 2018
Prior to joining the Maverick volleyball coaching staff, Klein served as a graduate assistant coach for the University of Nebraska from 2016-17. During his tenure with the Huskers, Klein was responsible for scouting skills training and practice set up and during his time with the Cornhuskers, Nebraska won a pair of Big 10 Championships and the 2017 NCAA Championship.
Klein has also served as a court camp coach for Gold Medal Squared in 2015 and as a head camp coach for S.P.I.K.E. Performance in 2013.
Before joining Nebraska, Klein played eight seasons of professional volleyball. From 2014-16, Klein plays for the Team Pineapple in the National Volleyball League. He helped his team to a national championship in 2014 and a second-place finish in 2015 and 2016. He was named to the All-SpikeNet Team in 2016.
Klein also played professional volleyball in Switzerland, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands. Klein helped the LUC Volleyball team in Lausanne to a Super Cup Championship in 2016 and the Kokkolan Tiikerit Club Team to a Finnish Championship in 2013. Klein holds the record for most blocks per match in both the Swedish and Finnish leagues. Â
In 2009, Klein received his bachelor's degree in biology at Graceland University. As a student-athlete, he received two All-American honors and was named the Newcomer of the Year in 2009. Klein finished his master's degree in higher education administration in July of 2018.Â
