Matt Schmidt joined Minnesota State Athletics in 2015 as associate head athletic trainer and in June of 2019, Schmidt was promoted to Director of Maverick Health & Performance/Head Athletic Trainer. As part of his duties at Minnesota State, Schmidt is the Certified Athletic Trainer for the men's hockey team and oversees the Maverick strength and conditioning staff as well as the athletic training staff.
The Arthur, Iowa native came to the Mavericks after serving as the head athletic trainer/equipment manager for Sioux City of the United States Hockey League.
Schmidt, who also worked with Sioux City as the athletic trainer for the Musketeers from 2000-03 – winning the Clark Cup in 2001-02 – spent 11 years at the head athletic trainer at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa from 2003-2014 where he also served and strength and conditioning coach for the Red Raiders and was an instructor in the Kinesiology department.
Schmidt, who worked with USA Wrestling at the NGB's World Team Trials in 2006 and 2007, U.S. Open National Championships in 2007, and the Cadet/Junior National Championships (2006-13), was selected to travel with the USA National Greco-Roman Team for a tournament in Russia in 2013. Additionally, Schmidt has experience with USA Hockey, winning a silver medal as he worked the 2019 World Junior Championships in Vancouver, Canada.
He earned an undergraduate degree in physical education (minor in health and career concentration in athletic training) from Northwestern in 2000 and owns a master's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of South Dakota in 2006.
He and his wife, Gena, have three children - Gabby, Gage and Grady.
