Pat Monaghan enters his sixth season as an assistant coach for the Maverick men’s basketball team. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Monaghan also serves as the team’s recruiting coordinator.
A native of Chicago, Ill., Monaghan comes to Minnesota State from Loyola University Chicago where he served as the team’s Director of Basketball Operations. Prior to his stint in Chicago, Monaghan was an assistant coach at Coffeyville Community College in Coffeyville, Kan., for two seasons. While at Coffeyville, he helped guide the Ravens to a 24-8 record in 2008-09, including a Jayhawk East Conference Championship.
Prior to his time at Coffeyville, Monaghan spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Wayne State College (Neb.). Monaghan began his playing career in 2002 at Harper Community College before transferring to Lewis University where he played for the Flyers from 2004-06.
During his time at Minnesota State, Monaghan has seen 13 Mavericks earn All-NSIC honors as guard Stephen Kirschbaum was a Second Team All-NSIC pick in 2012, while freshman Zach Romashko was named the league’s Freshman of the Year. The following year, Jarvis Williams received First Team All-NSIC honors, while Assem Marei and Zach Monaghan took home Second Team All-NSIC honors. Marei and Monaghan each garnered First Team All-NSIC honors in 2014, with Gage Wooten receiving Second Team All-NSIC honors. Last season, the Mavericks Marei and Monaghan receive All-NSIC First Team honors, with guard Connor Miller claiming All-NSIC Second Team honors. In 2016, both Jalen Pendleton and Jon Fuqua received All-NSIC accolades.
