Houston Jones joined the Minnesota State football team as the wide receivers coach in March 2021.
During his first season with the Mavericks in 2021, Jalen Sample would receive All-NSIC First Team honors for his efforts. Sample became just the eighth Maverick in program history to record more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season as he finished with 1,047 yards and eight touchdown catches.Â
Along with his responsibilities as the wide receivers coach, Jones was named the team's pass game coordinator prior to the start of the 2022 season. Maverick quarterbacks finished the 2022 season third in the NSIC with 2,782 passing yards and tied for second in the conference with 25 touchdown passes. Nyles Williams received All-NSIC First Team honors as he finished sixth in the NSIC in receiving yards with 699 and second in touchdown catches with eight. Hayden Ekern claimed All-NSIC Second Team honors as he threw for 1,837 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 56% of his passes.
A native of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jones has spent one season (2019) at Northern Illinois coaching the wide receivers. In 2019, the Huskies notched 2,611 receiving yards and 14 touchdown catches.
Before joining Northern Illinois, Jones worked as the quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator at Concordia-St. Paul for three seasons (2016-Feb. 2019). Prior to his time with the Golden Bears, Jones coached the quarterbacks and wide receivers for three seasons at Dakota Wesleyan (2013-Feb. 2016). While at Dakota Wesleyan, Jones received his master’s degree in educational policy and administration in 2015.
Jones earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts at Iowa State in 2009. He was a three-year letterwinner with the Cyclones as a wide receiver (2006-08) and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice.Â
