Chad Henning rejoined the the Minnesota State football coaching staff in February of 2021 as the offensive line coach. Prior to returning to Minnesota State, Henning served as the offensive line coach at Upper Iowa in 2020.
Henning first stint on the Mavericks coaching staff came during the 2018 and 2019 seasons where he served as the assistant offensive line coach. Henning wasa four-year letterwinner with the Maverick football team, with three of those seasons coming under head coach Todd Hoffner (2007-10).
Henning's first season with Minnesota State saw the Mavericks rush for 3,345 yards and 37 touchdowns, both of which ranked fifth in a season in team history. The offensive line also allowed just 12 sacks in 14 games, which ranked second in the NSIC. Evan Heim, Hunter Toppel and Jared Gossen each claimed All-NSIC accolades, with Heim and Toppel garnering All-American honors.
Henning's second season as assistant offensive line coached proved to be an eventful one as the Mavericks set school records in rushing yards (4,246), rushing attempts (713) and rushing touchdowns (59). The offensive line allowed just 19 sacks in 15 games. Evan Heim, Jared Gossen, Hunter Toppel and Carter Dowdle all received All-NSIC honors for their efforts during the 2019 season, with Heim going on to receive several All-American accolades.
The 2021 season saw Henning coach a pair of players to All-NSIC honors including Hunter Toppel and Jared Gossen. Toppel was named to the All-NSIC First Team and would go on to claim D2CCA All-Super Region 4 Second Team honors. The Maverick offense ranked second in the NSIC in rushing yards per game with 206.5.
Along with his offensive line coaching responsibilities, Henning was named the team's run game coordinator prior to the start of the 2022 season. As a unit, the Mavericks rushed for 2,107 yards and 26 touchdowns during the 2022 season. MSU's 26 rushing touchdowns were the second-most in the NSIC, while its 2,107 rushing yards were the fourth-most. The Mavericks also allowed the fourth fewest quarterback sacks (15) in the NSIC. Marshall Foerner and Jack Roussel each claimed All-NSIC First Team honors as a members of the offensive line, while running back Shen Butler-Lawson claimed All-NSIC Second Team accolades.
The 2023 season saw the Mavericks rush for 2,548 yards and 28 touchdowns. Five members of the Maverick offensive line would garner All-NSIC honors, including Marshall Foerner and Zach Roggow who claimed All-NSIC First Team honors. Deontae Veney, Nathan Gribble and Keeshawn Westley received All-NSIC Second Team accolades. Foerner would go on to claim Don Hansen All-Super Region Four Second Team honors and was also named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 list. In total, the Mavericks boasted the second-best rushing attack in the NSIC during the 2023 season as they averaged 212.3 rushing yards a game. MSU led the NSIC in rushing touchdowns with 28.
In 2024, the Mavericks rushed for 2,592 yards and 25 touchdowns, Four members of the MSU offensive line garnered All-NSIC accolades, including Marshall Foerner who was named to the All-NSIC First Team. Zach Roggow, Deontae Veney and Nathan Gribble were each named to the All-NSIC Second Team. Foerner would go on to claim All-American honors from the AFCA and Don Hansen, before being named to the CSC Academic All-American Second Team honors. In total, the Mavericks ranked second in the NSIC in total offense with 385.6 yards per game, including 172.8 rushing yards. MSU also led the NSIC in rushing touchdowns with 32.
The 2025 season saw Minnesota State rush for 2,908 yards and 38 touchdowns, which ranked tenth and fifth all-time in a season at Minnesota State, respectively. A pair of Mavericks from the offensive line earned All-NSIC honors for their efforts during the 2025 season, including Nathan Gribble who garnered All-NSIC First Team honors and Keats Dyslin who received All-NSIC Second Team honors. Gribble would go on to earn D2CCA All-Super Three First Team honors and D2Football.com Elite 100 accolades. As a unit, the Maverick offensive line helped MSU rush for 207.7 yards per game, which ranked fourth in the NSIC. The offensive line allowed just 12 sacks in 14 games which ranked 11th in NCAA Division II.
Before joining the Maverick coaching staff in 2018, Henning coached at Abundant Life/St. Ambrose Academy in Madison, Wis. for two seasons. In 2017, he served as the head coach and offensive coordinator. In 2016, he served as the defensive coordinator as the team went undefeated and won the state championship at the eight-man level.
A native of Sun Prairie, Wis., Henning graduated from Minnesota State in the spring of 2011 with a degree in law enforcement. Chad and his wife Courtney reside in North Mankato with their dogs Foxie, Melba and Kato
