Bryan Schmid

Bryan Schmid is entering his eighth season as a coach with the Minnesota State football program. This will be his fifth season as the defensive line coach after working with the defensive ends for the previous three seasons. His recruiting area includes Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota, and Eastern North Dakota.

Two MSU defensive linemen in Zach Dodge and Evan Perrizo claimed All-NSIC First Team honors for their effort during the 2017 season. Perrizo, who finished his career third all-time in sacks and tackles for loss, went on to claim D2CCA, AP and D2Football.com All-American honors. MSU finished the 2017 season ranked third in the NSIC in sacks with 33 and second in rushing defense (70.8 yards). MSU's rushing defense also ranked fourth in Division II.

In 2016, two Mavericks received All-NSIC honors as both Zach Dodge and Evan Perrizo each received All-NSIC First Team honors. Perrizo ranked fourth in the NSIC in tackles for loss with 13.5, with Dodge following right behind in sixth with 12.5. Both of them also ranked third in the NSIC is sacks with 8.5. As a team, Minnesota State ranked fourth in the NSIC is sacks with 37, of which 29.5 came from the defensive line.

The 2015 season saw the Purple and Gold hold opponents to an average of 72.8 rushing yards per game, 2.3 yards per carry, and just four rushing touchdowns. The Mavericks also notched a total of 34 quarterback sacks, of which 29 came from members of the defensive line. Defensive end Joshua Gordon established two MSU records of 43 sacks and 63 tackles for loss in his career and went on to garner NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second season in a row. Three members of the defensive line went on to receive All-NSIC accolades for their efforts during the 2015 season, including Gordon and defensive tackles Jeff Raymond, and Kaleb Wendricks.

In the last six seasons, the Maverick defensive line has produced 15 All-NSIC accolades, 3 NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors, and 3 All-American’s. All-American include Chris Schaudt in 2013, Joshua Gordon in 2014 and 2015 and Zach Dodge in 2016. 

As a player, Schmid was a three-year starter at defensive end for the Mavericks from 2007-2010. In 2008 he was the league’s Newcomer of the Year, and in 2009 he earned All-NSIC South First Team honors.

The Menasha, Wis., native earned his bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State in Sport Management in 2010 and completed his master’s degree in Sport Management in 2013.


Schmid and his wife Brittany have one child, Beau, and reside in Mankato.
