Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Minnesota State volleyball team (3-8, 1-2 NSIC) defeated Sioux Falls (4-7, 0-3 NSIC) 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19) on Friday at Stewart Center. Minnesota State hit .291 with 53 kills and 11 aces while holding Sioux Falls to a .125 hitting percentage.
"Feels good to compete at a high level on a very good team's home court," said Head Coach
Corey Phelps. "Took us a bit to settle in and then we played with focus, discipline, and grit. Our serving and passing was the difference maker tonight. Jadyn, was on point with 44 assists and running the offense to a .294 hitting percentage.
Addison Foor was outstanding tonight and out team defense showed up when we needed it. Proud of the effort, and now we have an even bigger match tomorrow that we're excited to get to."
Addison Foor finished with 18 kills while hitting .368 and scored 20 points. Foor achieved a career-high total of 18 kills.
Jadyn Lester recorded 43 assists, four service aces, nine digs and three blocks. This marks Lester's seventh consecutive game with 30 or more assists.
Savannah Meyer collected 25 digs and added two assists and one ace. Meyer achieved a season-high of 25 digs.
Avery Rosenberg tallied five blocks, including one solo block, and added four kills.
Avery Klein totaled 11 kills, second most on the team.
SET ONE
Minnesota State's biggest push came after Sioux Falls moved ahead 16-10, with the Mavericks winning seven of the next eight rallies to tie the first set at 17-17. Earlier,
Olivia Sturgis and Foor supplied kills off Lester assists, and she added a block to help Minnesota State pull within 7-6 before Sioux Falls created separation. The comeback stretch included a Foor kill set by Rosenberg, a Meyer service ace, and a Rosenberg block before MSU drew even. USF answered from there by moving ahead 22-18, and although
Lily Riese and Klein added late kills, Minnesota State dropped the set 25-22.
SET TWO
The Mavericks created separation late in the second set, winning seven of eight rallies from a 17-14 advantage to reach set point at 24-15 behind kills from Foor, Klein and Rosenberg, and a block involving Riese and Rosenberg. Earlier, MSU opened 2-0 on a USF service error and a
Kaelyn Wieland ace, then answered a 6-4 deficit with a Sioux Falls attack error and back-to-back Foor kills set by Lester to move ahead 7-6. Rosenberg followed with a kill and Foor added an ace to make it 10-7, while later blocks involving Klein and Sturgis, and Foor with Rosenberg helped MSU maintain control. After the Cougars scored twice from set point, Riese closed the set with a kill from Lester for a 25-17 Minnesota State win.
SET THREE
Minnesota State answered a 14-13 deficit with six straight points in the third set, using Riese's tying kill, a Lester and Sturgis block, a Lester kill, and consecutive Foor kills to move ahead 19-14. Earlier, after Sioux Falls went up 3-1, the Mavericks responded with a Riese kill, a
Jaelyn LaPlante service ace, and Foor kill during a stretch that put it in front 5-3. Sioux Falls later worked back to tie the set at 13 and take the next point, but LaPlante's service turn helped Minnesota State regain control. Lester added back-to-back service aces late, and Foor had kills on Minnesota State's final two points to finish a 25-17 set win.
SET FOUR
The Mavericks turned a 9-8 deficit into a 13-10 lead in the fourth set, getting two kills from Klein and service aces from
Morgan Bjella and Wieland during a 5-1 stretch, and did not trail again in a 25-19 set win. Earlier, MSU had fallen behind 7-3 before Lester answered with a kill, back-to-back service aces, and an assist on Foor's kill to tie the set at 7-7. After USF pulled within 18-16, Minnesota State got a point on a Sioux Falls attack error, a Riese kill from Lester, and another Cougars error to rebuild the margin to 21-16. Klein delivered three of Minnesota State's final four points on kills, including the final swing from Lester, while Bjella added a late ace as MSU closed the set 25-19.
