Mavericks Fall to No. 2 Wayne State in Straight Sets

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State volleyball team (2-7, 0-1 NSIC) lost 3-0 to No. 2 Wayne State (8-1, 1-0 NSIC)  on Friday at Taylor Center, falling 22-25, 16-25, 16-25. Minnesota State matched Wayne State with 42 kills but hit .216 compared with Wayne State .349.
 
Addison Foor led Minnesota State with 13 kills, hit .367 and added one service ace. Avery Rosenberg finished with nine kills on a .381 hitting percentage. Jadyn Lester recorded 30 assists, 10 digs and one service ace. Savannah Meyer collected a team-high 17 digs and added three assists.
 
Set One
 
Minnesota State made its biggest push after the Wildcats reached set point at 24-15, cutting the deficit to 24-22 with a sideout kill from Olivia Sturgis and six straight points on Kaelyn Wieland's serve. MSU answered a 3-1 deficit by moving in front 6-4, with Rosenberg, Lily Riese and Sturgis all putting down kills during the response. The set stayed within one point through a 12-12 tie after Lester scored off a Wayne State block error, but the Wildcats followed with separation that eventually grew to 24-15. The Wildcats reached 24-15 after a Molly Romano ace and kills by Miller and Mia Berg, but Minnesota State stayed in the set with seven consecutive points behind Wieland's serve. Minnesota State's late run included kills by Foor, Sturgis and Lester, plus a Wayne State setting error and attack error, before Wayne State ended the set 25-22.
 
Set Two
 
The Mavericks started the second set with a 7-5 lead, but the Wildcats scored five straight points to move ahead 10-7 and kept the pressure on from there. MSU built their early edge with a Lester service ace, a Foor ace, a kill by Rosenberg from Lester and a block by Avery Klein and Sturgis. Riese helped Minnesota State answer at several points, recording kills for 4-2, 12-16 and 13-19, while Foor added kills at 8-10, 15-20 and 16-22. Wayne State closed the set by taking the final three points, finishing off a 25-16 set win.
 
Set Three
 
Minnesota State's main push came after Wayne State built an 11-5 lead, as Olivia Sturgis put down a kill and Savannah Meyer served four straight points while Rosenberg and Foor alternated kills to cut the deficit to 11-10. Earlier, Foor accounted for two of Minnesota State's first three points, and Jaelyn LaPlante and Riese added kills as the home side tried to stay within reach. Wayne State answered Minnesota State's surge with eight straight points, including two service aces, to move ahead 19-10 before Foor stopped the stretch with another kill. Foor finished with six kills in the set and Rosenberg added five, but Wayne State closed out the third set 25-16.
